After his studies at the University of Granada, Rafael Ortega became a teacher in 1982. From that year e has worked at this University. Most of his research papers deal with differential equations and their connections with mechanics and topology.
Rafael has been the supervisor of 11 PhD thesis (two of them in collaboration). In six of them, the student came from a foreign University. He has also spent time with editorial work and he belongs to the board of the journals Archiv der Mathematik, Communications in Pure and Applied Analysis, Nonlinear Differential Equations and Applications NoDEA, Portugaliae Mathematica, Qualitative Theory of Dynamical Systems, Rendiconti dell'Istituto di Matematica dell'Università di Trieste, Studia Universitatis Babes-Bolyai Mathematica, Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Physik ZAMP.
He has also been an editor of Advanced Nonlinear Studies, Mediterranean Journal of Mathematics and Nonlinear Analysis. His next project is to complete a book on differential equations and topology of the plane.
His scientific interests evolve with time and his preference now is on Celestial Mechanics.
