Dr Macarena Perán graduated with a B. S. in Biology and a M.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 1996 from the University of Málaga, Spain. She moved to the Neuroscience Department at Durham University, UK, where she was awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship and graduated in 2000 with a PhD. She moved back to Spain and completed a postdoctoral program in the Faculty of Medicine at Granada University. In 2005 and 2006 Macarena went to Bath University, UK, and was a short-term postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biology & Biochemistry in Prof. David Tosh lab. In 2011 Dr Peran spent a year as a visiting scientist in the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, California, Prof. Juan Carlos Izpisua-Belmonte lab. Actually, Dr Peran is Reader in Anatomy, University of Jaen, Spain and belongs to the Institute for Regenerative Medicine and Pathobiology (IBIMER).
Dr Peran actual research interest is the development of new Anti-Cancer Drugs against Cancer
Stem Cell and the induction of Cell Differentiation with application in Cell Therapy. Actually,
Macarena is leading a competitive research project that aims to develop a model of vascular regeneration therapy using decellularized arteries coated with new polymers and chimeric ligands to promote endothelization. Macarena is also leading a project to study the anti-cancer effect of a novel pancreatic pro-enzyme formulation funding by the biotechnological company Propanc Biopharma Inc.
Dr Peran has more than 50 peer-reviewed publications in international journals with a RG score of 33,18. Furthermore, Dr Peran has participated in more than 20 competitive research projects and has led 7 research contracts within the private sector.
Macarena has been teaching Human Anatomy and related subjects since 2005 to an undergraduate student in Almeria and Jaén Universities. She has also taught postgraduate courses in the Masters of “Regenerative Medicine” and “Translational Research and Personalized Medicine” of Granada University, focusing on: “Cell differentiation”; “Tissue and Cell Immunostaining” and “Research funding’s opportunities”. Furthermore, Macarena has been the supervisor of 6 Doctoral Theses and 14 Master Theses and actually is supervising 2 more PhD students. Finally, Dr Peran is a co-founder of a Spin-Off bellowing to Granada and Jaén Universities and the Andalusian Health Service (PKR-Exogenetics S.L.) and she has been the inventor of 4 international patents.
